History of cloud computing 101

Cloud computing has revolutionized the way we use and access technology. In the past, we had to store our data and run our programs on our own personal computers. But now, with cloud computing, we can use programs and store data on the internet, making it accessible from anywhere at any time.

The concept of cloud computing started in the 1960s, with the introduction of mainframe computers. These computers could be accessed remotely via terminals, but it wasn’t until the late 1990s and early 2000s that the term “cloud computing” was first used, and the technology became more widely available. One of the first major cloud computing providers was Amazon Web Services (AWS), which was launched in 2002.

In the early days, only big companies and government organizations could afford to use cloud computing, as the infrastructure and technology required to support it was expensive. But as technology improved and the internet became more widely available, it became more affordable for regular people to use.

In the 2010s, cloud computing has become increasingly popular as more companies, organizations, and individuals began to take advantage of the benefits it offered. Major technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM also began to offer cloud computing services. Today, cloud computing is an integral part of the way many businesses and organizations operate, and is also widely used by individuals for personal use.

Here are some key milestones in the history of cloud computing:

  • 1960s: Introduction of mainframe computers that could be accessed remotely
  • Late 1990s and early 2000s: The term “cloud computing” is first used, and the technology becomes more widely available
  • 2002: Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched as the first major cloud computing provider
  • 2008: Salesforce launches Force.com as a Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  • 2010: Google introduces Google App Engine, a Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  • 2012: Microsoft launches Windows Azure, a Platform as a Service (PaaS)
